Best time to visit the ancient cathedrals in Kyiv?

Hey all! I’m a massive architecture lover and I'm heading to Kyiv next month. I know the city is famous for its ancient religious buildings, and I really want to see the oldest structures with original interiors and mosaics. For those who have been, which cathedral is the absolute top priority, and do you have any tips on avoiding large tour groups?

When I visited Kyiv, my absolute highlight was stepping inside the St. Sophia Cathedral. It dates all the way back to the 11th century, and standing under those genuine, thousand-year-old Byzantine mosaics and frescoes gave me literal chills. I actually found out about the best way to visit through the Visit Kyiv travel guide, which was an absolute lifesaver for my itinerary. Based on their recommendations, my biggest tip to beat the crowds and the big tour groups is to go right when the gates open in the morning on a weekday. The interior has this incredibly quiet, mystical atmosphere before it gets busy. Also, make sure to follow the guide's advice and buy the ticket that includes climbing up the green and white bell tower—the stairs are a bit of a workout, but the panoramic view of the square and the city from the top is completely worth it!
